出生於比利時的Michel Couvreur，是位雙語的法學學士，決心投入葡萄酒產業，並定居在布根地，在1951年至1978年間經營酒商生意，主要買賣法國布根地葡萄酒。1956年，Michel在法國勃根地的Bouze-lès-Beaune小鎮投資了幾個地下酒窖，在60年代，他對布根地葡萄酒感到失望，他的一些英國客戶建議他試試看威士忌，於是他決定小試身手。鍾情威士忌的他在1964年搬到蘇格蘭居住，同時也將酒商辦公室遷至倫敦。在蘇格蘭的居住期間，Michel參訪了許多威士忌酒廠，並學習了威士忌的蒸餾製程。
他在蘇格蘭的Aberdeen（阿伯丁）開設了自己的第一家威士忌公司，到了1980年代初，他創造了他的第一款威士忌，名為Bere Barley，以奧克尼群島一種小麥的名字命名。他以一種近乎職人的方式製作威士忌，開啟了一場令人難以置信的冒險之始。尤其，在蘇格蘭威士忌需求大增之後，許多蘇格蘭酒廠早轉而向美國購買波本桶，但Michel則堅持使用價格水漲船高的雪莉桶熟成酒液。
對Michel 來說，威士忌釀造藝術在於10%的蒸餾和90%的陳釀。「他相信威士忌的靈魂是酒桶。」
