Vouvray is a Loire Valley white wine made from Chenin Blanc. It can be dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling. What links them all is freshness: expect apple, pear, citrus, quince and, in richer styles, apricot and honey. It is also one of the most flexible Loire wines for food.
You know Sancerre.
Vouvray is the Loire bottle you try next.
At Penticton Pacific, we like Vouvray for one very practical reason: it works with the way Hong Kong eats.
Seafood, dim sum, roast pork, fried food, hot pot — one grape can cover a surprising amount of ground.
First: what exactly is Vouvray?
Vouvray is a wine appellation in Touraine, in France’s Loire Valley, just east of Tours.
The grape is Chenin Blanc.
And Chenin is the reason Vouvray can be so different from one bottle to the next.
Here is the shortcut:
| See this on the label | It means | Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sec | Dry | Fresh, crisp, citrus, apple |
| Demi-sec | Off-dry | Softer, rounder, gently sweet |
| Moelleux | Sweet | Richer, honeyed, apricot, quince |
| Brut / Sparkling | Bubbles | Fresh, lively, sometimes lightly toasty |

One grape. Four very different moods.
Is Vouvray dry or sweet?
Both.
This is the first thing to check when choosing a bottle.
Want something dry?
Look for Sec.
This is the easiest starting point if you normally drink Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or other dry whites.
Think: apple · pear · lemon · quince · white flowers
Fresh, but not necessarily light.
Chenin Blanc can have more texture than you expect, which is exactly why it works so well with food.
Want something a little softer?
Look for Demi-sec.
There is some sweetness, but the wine should still feel fresh.
This is where Vouvray becomes especially useful with Cantonese food.

A little sweetness works well with:
- char siu
- sweet soy
- chilli
- mildly spicy dishes
- richer sauces
Char siu + demi-sec is a pairing worth remembering.
Want something richer and sweet?
Look for Moelleux.
Expect flavours such as apricot, honey, quince, candied citrus and spice.
It works with blue cheese and foie gras, but it can also be a great after-dinner bottle on its own.
What does Vouvray taste like?
The answer depends on the style, but you can think of it like this:

Dry Vouvray
Apple, pear, citrus, quince, flowers
Demi-sec Vouvray
Ripe pear, yellow apple, quince, gentle honey
Sweet Vouvray
Apricot, honey, candied citrus, spice
Sparkling Vouvray
Apple, pear, citrus, fine bubbles, sometimes brioche
If you like white wines with freshness but want something beyond Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay, Vouvray is a very easy next step.
What food goes with Vouvray?
This is where Vouvray earns its place at a Hong Kong table.
Hong Kong meals rarely stay in one flavour lane. You can have seafood, roast meat, vegetables, fried dishes and spicy sauces all arriving within ten minutes.
Chenin Blanc can handle that kind of chaos surprisingly well.
Steamed fish
For Cantonese steamed fish with ginger, spring onion and soy, go dry.
A Vouvray Sec stays fresh enough for delicate fish, while still having enough texture to keep up with the soy and aromatics.
Choose: Vouvray Sec.
Dim sum
Dim sum is where Vouvray gets very easy.
Har gow? Dry or sparkling.
Siu mai? Dry or sparkling.
Char siu bao? Demi-sec.
Spring rolls? Sparkling.
Fried wontons? Also sparkling.
Choose: Sparkling Vouvray or demi-sec.
Roast pork and char siu
For char siu, the slight sweetness of demi-sec works with the glaze rather than fighting it.
For siu yuk, sparkling Vouvray is the better move.
Acidity and bubbles cut through the fat and crispy skin.
For siu yuk, bring bubbles.
Seafood
Prawns, crab, scallops, oysters and shellfish all work naturally with Vouvray.
For lighter seafood, choose dry.
For fried seafood, choose sparkling.
For crab with a sweeter sauce, try demi-sec.
Fried food
Fried chicken. Tempura. Salt-and-pepper squid. Crispy tofu.
The rule is simple:
If it is crispy, bubbles usually help.
Sparkling Vouvray brings freshness, fruit and enough texture to stay interesting beyond the first glass.
Hot pot
For seafood hot pot, chicken broth or lighter broths, start with a dry Vouvray.
If your dipping sauces bring more chilli, sesame or sweetness, demi-sec becomes more interesting.
For very rich or spicy broths, go colder and fresher rather than heavier.
Chinese banquet dinners
At a Chinese banquet, sparkling Vouvray works particularly well at the beginning of the meal.
Seafood, crispy dishes and roast pork all give it something to work with.
It is also an easy bottle to share when different people at the table have very different wine preferences.
What is sparkling Vouvray?
Sparkling Vouvray is one of the easiest ways into the appellation.
It is made from Chenin Blanc and can be produced using the traditional method, where the second fermentation happens in the bottle.
That is also how Champagne is made.
But sparkling Vouvray is not Champagne.
Champagne comes from Champagne.
Vouvray comes from the Loire Valley and is based on Chenin Blanc.
The result often feels fruitier, softer and very food-friendly.
It works for aperitif hour, but it does not need to stop there.
Keep it on the table.
Château Moncontour: a good place to start
If you want to understand Vouvray through an actual producer, Château Moncontour is a useful reference point.
The estate produces both still and sparkling expressions of Chenin Blanc.
Taste the two styles side by side and the appeal of Vouvray becomes obvious.
The still wine shows Chenin’s freshness and texture.
The sparkling version takes those same qualities and turns them into something brighter and more social.
When should you drink Vouvray?
You do not need a special occasion.
But if you want the quick version:
| Occasion | Try |
|---|---|
| Dim sum lunch | Sparkling Vouvray |
| Seafood dinner | Vouvray Sec |
| Char siu night | Demi-sec |
| House party | Sparkling Vouvray |
| Dinner at home | Sec |
| Host gift | Sparkling or still Vouvray |
| Chinese banquet | Sparkling |
| Restaurant wine list | Sec + sparkling |
Vouvray is especially useful when you need a wine that feels interesting without becoming difficult.
Can Vouvray age?
Yes.
Chenin Blanc is known for ageing well because it naturally keeps plenty of acidity.
Young Vouvray tends to feel brighter and fruitier.
Older bottles can become more honeyed, waxy, toasty and savoury.
Sweet Vouvray can age for a long time, but good dry wines can evolve beautifully too.
That said, not every bottle needs a cellar plan.
If it tastes good now, drink it now.
How do you choose a Vouvray?
Start with the meal.
Not the technical notes.
| If you want… | Choose… | Eat it with… |
|---|---|---|
| Crisp white wine | Sec | Steamed fish, prawns, seafood |
| Something softer | Demi-sec | Char siu, spicy or sweeter dishes |
| Bubbles | Brut / Sparkling | Dim sum, siu yuk, fried food |
| Something sweet | Moelleux | Cheese, foie gras, after dinner |
| One bottle for sharing | Sparkling or Sec | Home dinners, banquets, parties |
And if the label feels confusing, ask.
A good wine merchant should be able to tell you:
Is it dry? What does it taste like? What should I eat with it?
That is enough to make a good choice.
