Why we love it
Do you know this appellation is named after the famous Roman leader, Julius Caesar?
Juliénas is the oldest Beaujolais cru, with traces of vine from 2000 years back. Situated between Saint-Amour and Chénas produces single-varietal red wine which is typically intense and generous - rich in texture and tender fruit aromas from Gamay. Locals often refers it as "Bon Viveur" (Good food in English)!
Not as well-known as its neighbouring crus in Hong Kong, such as Moulin-á-vent or Morgon, Juliénas is actually one of the hidden Beaujolais gems which has the perfect structure for longer term ageing.
My winemaker friend Rémi at Domaine de la Côte de Berne loves to pair it with his favourite local dish - Coq au Vin á la Maison (Home-made French chicken braised with wine, lardons, mushrooms, and sometimes garlic). This wine reminds me of Traditional Chinese Peking Duck serves with Hoisin Sauce because of it tannic and acidic structure.
Northern Chinese cuisines or Asian spices lovers, it is time to adventure!
